Beijing National Stadium (Bird's Nest)

The National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) is located in south central area of Beijing Olympic Park, the total building area is about 258,000 sqm, including 204,000 sqm for occupied areas. It can accommodate up to 91,000 seats for audiences, including 80,000 fixed seats. The National Stadium Project is top grade sports building, the designed service life of major structure is about 100 years. What’s more, the length of the major structure from south to north is 333 m, and from east to west is 296 m. It is a oval-shaped structure with the maximum height is about 69 m. In addition, the project was started on Dec. 24, 2003 and completed on June 28, 2008.

The National Stadium is located on a platform base with a gentle slope, audience can walk along the platform base from Beijing Olympic Park to enter the National Stadium. The north side of platform base is sink-type warm-up area, which is connected to competition arena via passages for competitors. The complex annexes of the National Stadium and business activities held after the game shall be arranged below the platform base, making entry mode for different groups more reasonable. Meanwhile, the clarity, purity and integration in appearance of main building shall also be kept. There are seven layers above its base, including spectator audience facilities, media work-space and VIP reception. And there are three layers below its base, including ring roads in zero layer, parking lot and mass function room. The bowl-shaped stands are also divided into three layers (upper, middle, lower), including balconies and seating space set between middle and lower stands.

During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, as main venue, the National Stadium undertook the opening ceremony, track and field events and football finals. The fantastic opening ceremony complemented the biggest and grandest structure of Bird’s Nest perfectly, making it stunning. A group of elite competitors such as Usain Bolt and Yelena Isinbayeva successively achieved their record performance in Bird’s Nest.

The main body of the National Stadium is a Bird’s Nest appearance complied by a series steel trusses embracing bowl-shaped seating area. The spatial structure is very novel, unique and aesthetic with powerful shock power and visual impact, integrating buildings and structures and fully embodying the beauty of natural harmony.

At present, the National Stadium is one of the largest sports building in the world. The enclosure construction for roofing is steel structure covered with a double membrane structure on it. The double membrane structure means upper transparent ETFE membranes fixed between upper trusses steel structures as well as lower translucent PTFE suspended ceilings fixed below steel structure truss and side walls of inner rings.

The advanced Eco Design and green measures had been adopted during the construction of the National Stadium, such as good ventilation and natural lighting, full collection of rainfalls, utilization of recyclable geothermal energy resource, application of solar photo-voltaic power technology, etc. There are 312 sets of geothermal heat pump system wells under football ground within Bird’s Nest. A great deal of power resources will be saved after using buried tube heat-exchange tubes by absorbing the heats in the land soil in winter for heat addition to Bird’s Nest in winter while absorbing cooling capacity in the land soils for cooling the Bird’s Nest in Summer. Additionally, the specialized Rainwater Recycling System is set on the top of Bird’s Nest so that the recycled rainwater will finally turn to the recycle water used for greening, toilet flushing, fire fighting and even rinsing the tracks. Many advanced environment-friendly measures make the National Stadium become a veritable large-scale “Green Building”.
