China Pavilion in Milan Expo

Milan Expo 2015 was the latest Registered World Exhibition followed by Shanghai World Expo 2010 with the Expo theme of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, focusing on agriculture, grain and food, which would be held from May 1st, 2015 to Dec. 31st, 2015. Academy of Arts & Design Tsinghua University along with Studio Link-Arc workshop eventually secured the bidding from 14 design institutions participated in the assessment of “Design Scheme of China Pavilion for Milan Expo 2015” by their design scheme with the core ideas of “Heaven-Earth-Mankind”, providing a perfect demonstration of the themes for China Pavilion - Land of Hope, Food for Life by means of its Innovative design philosophy, rich design essence and highly-generalized design methodology.

 

With the theme of “Land of Hope, Food for Life ”, China Pavilion was the second largest self-built foreign pavilion displayed in Milano Expo 2015, covering an area of 4,590 sqm. This was the first time for China to participate in overseas Expo in the form of independent self-built pavilion as well as the first time for China to display the image of entire country by independent design. 

The scheme of China Pavilion was designed throughout the core concept of “Heaven-Earth-Mankind-Harmony”. When viewing from the front, building was the skyline of natural. When viewing from the back, building was also the skyline of the city. With the rooftop of the building, ground and space, the construction scheme combined the concept of “Heaven-Earth-Mankind” into the elements such as rice and wheat, just looking like “fields of wheat” on the “Land of hope”.

 “Land of hope” means expanse of Chinese lands and Chinese ancient civilization by means of metaphor. The China Pavilion fully absorbs the structure and morphology of Chinese traditional architecture combining with modern technology, forming the image of China Pavilion with intense intention of Chinese traditional architecture. With bamboo weaving materials with Chinese symbolic meaning covered on the roof, the material cost would be greatly reduced. Under the golden sunlight in Italy, the golden blaze will be refracted. 

The exhibition design of China Pavilion is consisted of five themes, including Preface, Heaven, Mankind, Earth and Harmony. For “Heaven” theme exhibition area, 24 seasonal division points it exhibited condensed Chinese respect to the Nature and the philosophy of development based on conformity to nature. For “Mankind” theme exhibition area, it was the central exhibiting area for specific exhibiting items which was exhibited centered on three plates - Agricultural Civilization, Bread Is the Staff of Life and Future-oriented Wisdom. For “Earth” theme exhibition area, it displayed the diversity of terrain - mountains and rivers in vast land of China as well as spectacular of Chinese farmers’ working and harvest. For “Harmony” theme video hall, it described the Chinese thoughts of seeking the harmonious balance between mankind and nature as well as sustainable development in the course of developing agriculture for obtaining grain and foods.
