On the morning of Sept. 25th, 2016, the world’ largest five hundred meters Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope, known as “super-eye”, was officially enabled in Pingtang, Guizhou province. With the receiving area equaled to 30 football field’s area, FAST is the world’s largest telescope independently innovated by China, breaking the 100m limit of radio telescope.

FAST is the one of the Nine S &T infrastructures in China, taking use the pit area of karst region of Guizhou as the telescope site, laying thousands of units to form the coronal active reflex in the pit area, and adopting light cable drag mechanism and parallel robot to achieve high precision positioning of the receiver, which are known as three independent innovation of China. It has been said that, for the radio telescope, the larger diameter, the greater sensitivity, so that more cosmic information can be searched. Previously, the 305-meter Arecibo telescope located in Puerto Rico and developed by USA is the world’s largest radio telescope. Now, FAST breaks the record, making the radio astronomy of China maintain the world's leading place in the coming 10 to 20 years.

FAST applied the technological innovation achievements like Research and Development of Key Technology for Reflector Construction of Zhejiang Southeast Space Frame Group Limited Company, which is the main constructor of this project. In addition, FAST applied lots of new type of aluminum alloy bolt ball nodes which are also innovated by Zhejiang Southeast Space Frame Group Limited Company, that is, the aluminum tube is riveted together with a sealing plate through special riveting equipment, so as to make 36 bolt spheres and 120 rod pieces to form an aluminum alloy back frame to produce stronger bearing capability.
