New Science & Technology Museum

This new science & technology museum is located in Dongjin New District, Xiangyang City, Hubei Province. The total building area of this project is about 33800 sqm, while its total height is 29.76 m, including 1 underground floor and 3 floors above the ground. The design of this museum based on the concept of “night sky” and the museum looks like an oval ball with 177 m in length and 119 m in width. Meanwhile, this museum is also called the “eye of exploration” since it shaped as an “eye” when seeing from the sky.

This museum adopts the structure of concrete frame + steel pipe lattice shell, and its roof uses the spatial irregular curved surface, while the curved surface is consisted of skewed grid with 2 directions. Till now, this museum is the largest lattice shell with curved surface for roof part in China. In addition, this project also contains 3000 steel pipes with the diameters of 600-800 mm, and the lattice shell has 6,725 welds with the first pass yield of 98.5%, while the frame structure has 5,648 welds with the first pass yield of 99.4%. Once completed, this museum mainly serves for the purposes of children’s science park, academic exchange center, etc.
